Case Study: Precision Stainless Steel Fasteners for Medical Imaging
Discover our hybrid manufacturing approach for precision 316L stainless steel shoulder bolts used in MRI scanner mechanisms.
The Challenge
A global medical device manufacturer required a custom shoulder bolt for a high-precision MRI scanner mechanism. The part required 316L stainless steel for non-magnetic properties and biocompatibility, along with extremely tight tolerances on the shoulder diameter (±0.015mm).
The Hybrid Solution
Due to the toughness of 316L and the tight tolerances, full CNC was prohibitively expensive. Taily Metal implemented a hybrid approach: multi-station cold heading for the primary blank and head shape, followed by secondary precision grinding for the shoulder diameter and mirror finish (Ra 0.4).
Outcome and Savings
This hybrid strategy achieved a 45% cost saving and ensured consistent quality through 100% automated optical inspection (AOI).
