Fastener Material Selection Guide: Steel, Stainless, Brass & Aluminum
Choosing the right fastener material is a balance of strength, corrosion resistance, cost, and weight. This guide compares carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, and aluminum for common industrial applications.
Why material choice matters
The material determines how your fastener behaves under load, corrosion, temperature, and time. A fastener that fails in the field costs far more than the few cents saved on the raw material — which is why professional buyers specify material, grade, and finish together.
Carbon steel — the workhorse
Carbon steel is the most common fastener material: strong, easy to cold head, and inexpensive. Grades 4.8 to 12.9 cover everything from light furniture to heavy structural joints. The catch: bare carbon steel rusts, so it is almost always paired with a protective finish — zinc plating for indoor use, hot-dip galvanizing or Dacromet for outdoor and marine environments.
Stainless steel — corrosion resistance
Stainless steel fasteners (most commonly 304 and 316) resist rust without plating. 304 is the standard choice for food, pharmaceutical, and general outdoor use; 316 adds molybdenum for harsher chloride environments such as coastal areas and chemical plants. Expect to pay 3–5x carbon steel, and note that stainless fasteners can gall (seize) during assembly — use anti-seize or lubricated coatings for high-torque applications.
Alloy steel — high strength
Alloy steel (often 35CrMo, 40Cr, or SCM435) is heat-treated to reach grades 10.9 and 12.9 for high-strength bolting — engine components, heavy machinery, structural steel connections. High-strength bolts require careful torque control and are typically zinc-plated or Dacromet-coated to resist hydrogen embrittlement risks during plating.
Brass — conductivity and aesthetics
Brass fasteners offer good corrosion resistance, excellent electrical conductivity, and a polished appearance. They are common in plumbing, electrical terminals, musical instruments, and decorative hardware. Brass is softer than steel, so it is limited to lower-load applications.
Aluminum — lightweight
Aluminum fasteners weigh about one-third of steel, making them popular in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and outdoor gear where weight matters. Aluminum is soft and can corrode galvanically when paired with steel or stainless — use isolation or coated washers in mixed-metal assemblies.
